Indonesians buy travel insurance late

Repeat Buyers

Repeat buyers plan further ahead — and buy independently

41% of customers have bought at least twice, averaging four policies each. They typically buy 18 days before each trip, and because these later trips tend to run longer, they pay 31% more per policy than first-time buyers.

Longer lead times, longer trips

Repeat customers book about 18 days out, 50% earlier than first-time buyers, and take trips lasting 12 days versus 9. That extra runway helps explain the premium they pay.

They're self-sufficient

Repeat customers need less support — they rely on Igloo's AI tools, informed by their own purchase history, to navigate and buy independently.

Adapting Distribution

Adapting insurance distribution to Indonesians' buying behavior

Despite a strong recovery in outbound travel since the pandemic, travel insurance remains significantly underpenetrated in Indonesia due to structural and experiential barriers, from jargon-filled product pages, lack of user guidance across insurers and plans, and unavailability outside office hours.

In June 2026, Igloo launched an end-to-end AI travel insurance assistant, Igi, in Indonesia that guides travellers through the full travel insurance journey, from picking a destination and plan comparison to personalised recommendation, payment, and policy issuance, within a single conversational interface. Unlike chatbots or AI-enabled customer support, Igi autonomously handles the complete purchase journey end to end, from a question to comparison, recommendation, and purchase.

Since launching, users who engaged with Igi were 44% more likely to complete a travel insurance purchase compared to those who used the website alone, illustrating how adapting insurance distribution to Indonesians' travel behaviour and lifestyle habits makes protection more accessible, seamless, and ultimately beneficial.

About Igloo

Simple insurance.
Powered by data.

Igloo runs one of Southeast Asia's largest insurance data ecosystems, having facilitated over 2.2 billion policies for 40 million-plus customers since 2019 and processing 100 million policies a month across six regional markets and dozens of industries. Because this data is drawn from live insurance transactions rather than surveys, Igloo uses it to design better products with partners, price risk more accurately, and power the AI embedded across its insurance technology stack. The same intelligence feeds back to the ecosystem — through data insights that reveal how Southeast Asians actually buy cover, and through tools like the Igloo Insurance Risk Score that extend behavioural risk assessment into markets where traditional credit data falls short.
